The International Workers’ Day commemorates more than the historic struggles and gains made by the labor movement regarding workers’ rights and their working conditions, it also provides an annual opportunity to take pride in our work and celebrate the contribution each one of us makes to society. In the long run, the success of any company depends on the work of its dedicated employees and their empowerment to do their jobs right. Since the late 19th century, large industrial enterprises have increasingly used various welfare instruments such as health insurance or contributions to pension funds to cement the commitment of employees. From 1910, Tungsram’s white collar workers were members of the pension fund of the Hungarian Commercial Bank of Pest until the foundation of the company’s own pension fund in 1929. Already before WWI, Tungsram paid the fees for its workers at the National Accident Insurance Association. Workers were members of the Workers’ Health Insurance Fund. Between the two world wars, CEO Lipót Aschner not only built a cultural center with a canteen and sport hall, shower and changing rooms for the workers, he also laid the foundation of generous sport facilities serving the employees and the inhabitants of Újpest, as well. After WWII, the support for the cultural activities, sport and recreation of employees continued, including the establishment of nurseries and kindergartens. Between 1966 and 1975 Tungsram built 930 apartments in Újpest, mostly for Tungsram-employees. Many who spent their prime years or their whole working life at Tungsram remember having been encouraged to study and aspire for more, and having lived a full life at the company. Full scholarships allowed many the chance to actually begin studying. After working hours, employees polished their other talents in the choir, the dance club, the theatre group, or in various sport groups. The Tungsram water resorts and holiday center offered a possibility to all employees to spend the weekend and their holidays at affordable prices. As a result, a community of employees emerged that was committed to the company, working often voluntarily and delivering quality – the key for the reputation of the name of Tungsram.
